Alice YuJing Yan

Alice YuJing Yan is originally from China where she earned a BFA in animation. She began metal-smithing (literally fashioning useful items (tools, kitchenware, tableware, jewellery) out of various metals) at NSCAD University in 2011, and received her BFA in 2014. Yan uses numerous fabrication techniques in metal to “… allow me to explore form that is both representative of architectural elements that I love and my inner most emotional feelings.”

Yan utilizes this new series of works to prompt the viewer to create conversation amongst the pieces by placement and negative space.  “I create [works] that is very personal and emotional, also I believe that artists’ hand is a representation of the artist’s vision, and there must be connections between the artist and the viewer through the art production.”

Toronto outdoor art exhibition

The Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition is Toronto’s first, largest, and longest running outdoor art fair – providing fresh art, fresh faces, in the fresh air since 1961. Attracting an audience of over 100,000 people annually, and showcasing the work of over 350 artists, the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition prides itself on creating an environment which gives artists the chance to interact directly with the public in an informal setting – removing the barriers to access, and dispelling the formality of a traditional gallery or art fair experience.

Deliberately Ambiguous: Visual Arts Exhibitions Winter 2016

Our five winter exhibitions feature artist defying categorization. Highly aware and engaged with contemporary culture, these artists embrace it all. Our feature exhibition, Non-Objective, highlights the achievements of our Craft & Design Studio with many past and present Artist-in-Residence. This exhibition confounds specific readings of the craft “object” and happily engages in ambiguity.

Non-Obiective

Marissa Alexander, Alexia Bilyk, Anouk Desloges, Helen Liene Dreifelds, Azza El Siddique, Andrea Kott, Marie-Eve G-Castonguay, Grant McRuer, Meghan Price, Linda Sormin, Alice Yujing Yan.

Curated by Melanie Egan and Patrick Macaulay.
